Rachel Ashwell's The Prairie in Round Top

I had the great pleasure of staying at Rachel Ashwell's "The Prairie" Bed & Breakfast in Round Top, TX last summer with my mom and sister. It was so wonderful and I took tons of pictures to capture the essence of the property to share with you and realized that I never actually posted about this gem! I promised a post earlier this month, so here it is. Better late than never, right?

I first wrote about Ashwell's Texas inn back in 2012 (you can check out that post here), and it has been by far my most read piece on the blog. Rachel Ashwell is the queen and originator of shabby chic, so it is no surprise that her Round Top property is gorgeous and on point with shabby decor. I am no photographer, and these photos don't come close to doing the property justice, but I hope you can get a taste for the beautiful decor in and the serene environment around the quaint farmstead.

First up - the main house, called "The Liliput Lodge":

The living room downstairs for all house guests to enjoy.

We had the upstairs suite, which has two bedrooms, a shared bath for both rooms, and a great balcony with view of the lane.

This is the Bella Blue room.

Here is the Pink Primrose room.

Even the furniture on the balcony had that shabby charm that invites relaxation. The house has such a familiar feel and cozy comfort about it.

View from the balcony.

There are four other buildings on the property to rest your head.

The Cornflower Cottage

The Bluebonnet Barn

Gorgeous landscaping around all the buildings.

The Faith Cottage

The Meadow Manor

Where the breakfast magic happens: The Rangers Lounge. This is where guests gather to enjoy a home-cooked breakfast with farmhouse tables and perfectly mismatched shabby linens.

Resident kitty greets the guests.

Outdoor gathering area.

This is a gathering area for all guests to enjoy in the Rangers Lounge.

This picture epitomizes Rachel Ashwell's uniquely shabby style.

The dining room.

Dishes and wrapped flatware.

View from the back patio- what a way to enjoy breakfast!

The other two buildings are the Pearl Barn and the Shabby Shack (the store which sells all of Rachel Ashwell's goods).

The Pearl Barn holds lots of special events - what a great wedding venue!

Side of the store and the rusty old truck.

My wonderful travel companions!

Thanks for taking a tour with me. I hope you get to see the property (and this sweet kitty) for yourself one day!

Have a chic week,

~Sarah

Junk HIPPY Rosenberg - Show recap

Junk HIPPY was this past Saturday in Rosenberg, TX and I was fortunate to be a part of the madness! Named one of the top 7 flea markets/barn sales by Country Living earlier this year, Kristen and her Junk HIPPY crew (family) brought the shoppers out of the woodwork! Or at least out of the Houston area...there were thousands of shoppers (I've heard 6,000) who braved the crowds, heat, and lines to get a glimpse at the junk. When I pulled in to the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds at 7:30am on Saturday morning to finish pricing and arranging my space, there were three dedicated shoppers who formed the start of the line awaiting the 9am opening. 9am came, and this is what the line had grown to:

The line was long outside but the flow of shoppers was manageable through our building for the first 30 minutes or so. And then it got crazy! It was awesome and a bit overwhelming to have a line in my booth, and my mom and I didn't stop wrapping up goods for several hours straight.

I am so thankful for my Barn Chic crew (family) for all their help this weekend; there is no WAY I could have done it without them! My parents again drove down from IL to help, and Andrew came in Friday night; the four of us managed to load and unload a trailer full of junk twice, set up a booth, nearly sell out of the boutique clothing, and wrangle the living mannequin who was cutting his first tooth. Some of those tasks were easier than others...but I am happy to report that my little guy did just fine at his first show!

Here are some before pictures of my space in building D:

I am so glad I had a great show with my clothing, because I hardly sold any antiques! Which meant the trailer was as full going home as it was headed there and every heavy piece went back with me. But I will not complain because I had my BEST.SHOW.EVER. thanks to the junk warriors who endured the heat, lines, and crowded buildings. I sold out of my Grace & Lace clothing and accessories as well as most all of my BABY Barn Chic goods. I met some wonderful shoppers and I am thankful for all the Facebook love I've gotten from my new customers!

Thanks to this lovely lady for everything she does, including designing and building this dressing room and packing a U-Haul with scientific precision.

Thanks to my dad for the heavy lifting, dressing room assembly, and endless trips to the car to put away boxes.

Here's my little model in his adorable Milkbarn Organics onesie:

Not pictured: my amazing husband who supports my small business dream and drove three hours on our 5th anniversary to enjoy a romantic dinner of pizza on the floor outside of the bathroom in our hotel room at the Rosenberg La Quinta while our son slept in the pack and play in the corner.

Two big orders of new inventory placed today to replace the depleted stock! Can't wait to share the new finds soon!

Did you make it to Junk HIPPY? How was your experience?

Have a chic week!

Junk Hippy this Saturday!

I am gearing up for my first show in a year! This weekend I am excited to return to Junk Hippy's Rosenberg (TX) show at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds from 9am to 6pm on Saturday, July 18. I am feeling a bit rusty as I haven't done a show in so long, and it will certainly be an interesting experience with an 8 month old! I welcome any tips that you show mamas may have for a first timer with a little one!

Here's my sweet boy showing off his Milkbarn whale kerchief bib. I am so in love with the adorable prints of this line and the organic cotton is so super soft. The bib is for sale but the baby is not!

I hope to see you in Rosenberg on Saturday! If you can't make it, shop online at Barn Chic Boutique and use code $10off to take $10 off your purchase of $50 or more. Get the goods before they sell out this weekend, and hurry - this code is only good through Thursday.

Have a chic week,

~Sarah

Enjoying the current season

Hope you are having a wonderful holiday weekend! I can't believe it is almost the 4th of July!

I ran out to a store last night to pick up some things for an overnight trip we are making this weekend. A few things on my list - a pool float, beach towels, and a large picnic blanket. I struggled finding summer things, but I sure could have picked up some new pencils, notebooks, binders, Halloween window clings, turkey decorations for the Thanksgiving table, or a pre-lit Christmas tree. What?! Why are the school supplies out?  Didn't school just end? The smell of cinnamon permeated the aisle lined with pumpkins and scarecrows. Thanksgiving and Christmas?! I'm seasonally confused! Isn't it just the beginning of July?!

I don't know who is shopping for Christmas right now, but there must be someone or stores wouldn't sacrifice the shelf space. I am going to focus on soaking up the current season - minus the pool float and picnic blanket that I couldn't find!

I wish you all a great 4th of July. Enjoy the moment and make great memories!

Have a chic week(end),

~Sarah

At long last...

It's sad that the last blog post I wrote was when I changed the screen to "Spring."

It's every teacher's favorite season! This teacher's summer started yesterday and I could not be more excited. It was a l.o.n.g. time coming and I look forward to spending much more time with this little guy!

I am also excited to get back into the swing of shows and sales. My next show is July 18 at the Junk Hippy show in Rosenberg, TX; I am about to order some new inventory for Barn Chic Boutique, more great organic cotton baby apparel from Milkbarn is on its way for BABY Barn Chic, and I will have some great vintage finds straight from my living room as we attempt to baby proof (at least one room in) this house!

Today I received confirmation that I will be a vendor at the Rusted Gingham Barn Sale again this year after taking a break last year to have a baby - good thing I didn't try to do the show last November as my water broke the day of the sale! Looking forward to joining Suzanne and all the great vendors at this year's show on November 6-7 in Gonzales, TX.

I am kicking off the summer season with a big sale at the boutique; take 20% off any order with discount code SCHOOLSOUT, and bump that percentage to 30% with a purchase of $100 or more (use discount code SUMMER30).

The adorable footed rompers from Milkbarn baby.

Looking forward to more blogging and junking this summer! I also hope to post about my stay at Rachel Ashwell's The Prairie last summer - talk about overdue! This teacher gets a zero for on time performance.

Here's to a summer of family fun and junking adventures!

Have a chic week,

~Sarah

Too early?

I might have jumped the gun with this emphatic seasonal statement in my kitchen.

Even in Austin, TX, winter is in full force. We had a two hour delay at school this week (yes!). Guess I ought to just embrace it, at least through the end of the month (which happens to be today). But as soon as February is over, winter should be too.

Use discount code WINTER15 to save an additional 15% off your total purchase at Barn Chic Boutique- but hurry because this sale (and hopefully the winter weather) ends today!

Stay warm!

Have a chic week(end),

~Sarah

Reveal: The Baby's Room!

Happy New Year! Yeah, yeah, it is almost February, but time both stands still and slips away from me these days. Since I have yet to share any pictures of the awesome room that is the 'baby's room,' I thought I would finally post a reveal...now that my son is nearly 3 months old!

What I love most about AJ's room is the contribution of friends and family that came together for a warm and loving space for our son. I had a vision to create an Aztec/woodlands theme for the room and spent hours looking for great fabrics that would bring together elements like tee-pees, feathers, antlers, dream-catchers, and arrows. I am very much intrigued by American Indian culture and wanted to channel that vibe in AJ's room. Who better to help me turn this vision into a reality than my incredibly talented mom. If I had half the skills that this woman has in her left pinky I would be happy!

She made the curtains, changing pad cover, and crib skirt, but most impressive is the awesome tee-pee, which she surprised me with the weekend before AJ was born. These things sell for a couple hundred dollars at children's home decor sites, and my mom whipped one up that puts those to shame! She even stenciled around the sides and used coordinating fabric from the curtains.

One of my other favorite focal points of the room is the pallet art made by the talented Julie of Vintage Soul TX

That piece helped sell me on the dresser I got at West Elm, which I agonized over for about six weeks before I finally bought it. I even carted the pallet into the store to see if the dresser would compliment the wood tones of the pallet. I pulled the trigger on the dresser when they said they offer a teacher discount; I'm a sucker for saving money! This is a nice piece that isn't just furniture for a baby's room, but rather can be used for years to come. It is made of reclaimed pine and looks great on the wall diagonal from the pallet.

The rack to the right of the dresser is actually a magazine rack that I ordered from Amazon and is the perfect diaper storage system! We are using cloth diapers and this rack is great for organizing the covers, inserts, and boosters.

The black architectural piece above the dresser was the initial inspiration for the black and white color scheme. This piece was in the room before when it was a guest bedroom, and I loved it so much I wanted to incorporate it into the nursery. I bought it at an antique store near my hometown in IL and love that there is a piece of history from my area in his room.

I went FTM (first time mom) crazy on researching a crib that would be safe, non-toxic, affordable, and stylish. The crib I first loved had horrible reviews for paint odors that lingered months after the crib was put together. I hadn't even considered the safety of the finishes or materials used in making the crib, but I then became consumed with finding one that didn't contain (such a high level of) harmful chemicals. I ended up getting the Sundvik crib from Ikea. European regulations are much stricter when it comes to use of chemicals and this crib had excellent reviews - and it is cheap and cute!

(This was the only time AJ has been in the crib; he will grow into it soon enough!)

Several of these beautiful photos were taken by my lifelong friend Rachel - follow her adorable photo shoots on her Facebook page! Her friends have the cutest kids  :)

We got the glider and ottoman from Buy Buy Baby where I tested Every. Single. Chair they had for minutes at a time during my many trips to that store this summer. I was thoroughly overwhelmed by all the baby stuff in that place and would retreat to the glider section to put my swollen feet up. I would say that off-white isn't the most child or pet friendly color for fabric upholstery, but it sure looks great in the room (and I bought the stain-removal package where they will replace the chair if the stain doesn't come out!).

The ottoman has a handmade quilt from one of Andrew's family friends on top of it and I cover the seat of the glider with a towel since my hairy cat has claimed it as his new favorite seat in the house. Many a time I have gone in to rock the baby only to discover that my cat is in the chair. He has had a rough few months adjusting to our new bundle of joy, so I let the cat be and find another place to sit.

Hope you enjoyed the virtual tour of our nursery! I am so happy with how it turned out and I love that it has so many personal touches from my mom and friends. I am one lucky mama with a spoiled little boy!

Have a chic week,

~Sarah

Improvising

Happy Holidays! I can hardly believe that it is almost Christmas and that our new baby is over 6 weeks old now! We finally got a Christmas tree on Saturday (December 20). The bonus to waiting until the holiday is almost over to buy a tree? Half off! There were five trees from which to choose and I would say it turned out pretty good for a last minute discount tree! I would have been happy with a Charlie Brown tree, but instead we got a decent good smelling fraser fir.

We bought the tree on Saturday, got the lights up Monday evening, and I think I will forgo any additional decorating. The smell and the lights are the two best parts of the tree, right?

So I only have two stockings. I know, I know, go get another one for our sweet baby boy. I definitely will, but for now, I improvised.

I am a holiday problem-solving guru.

Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas!

Have a chic week,
